About Temple of Ancient Monarchs

The temple where Ming and Qing emperors offered sacrifices to China's legendary sage-kings and earlier rulers, built in 1530–31 under the Jiajing Emperor and later enlarged by the Qing until 188 rulers were honoured. Its main hall, Jingde Chongsheng Hall, was re-roofed in imperial yellow tiles during a rebuilding of 1762–64, and the honoured rulers, who included Xianbei, Khitan, Jurchen and Mongol emperors, were chosen to present an unbroken line of legitimate dynasties.
