About Niujie Mosque
Regarded as Beijing's oldest and largest mosque, it is the centre of the Muslim neighbourhood along Niujie (Ox Street); it is said to have been founded in 996 under the Liao, was rebuilt in 1443 and enlarged in 1696. Its timber halls look like a Chinese temple from outside but are decorated inside with Arabic calligraphy, and the street around it is known for halal food shops.
