About Fayuan Temple
Regarded as the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Beijing's old city, it was founded in the Tang dynasty in memory of soldiers killed in the Korean campaigns of the 640s and rebuilt many times since. Its courtyards climb gently north past halls with Ming bronze Buddhas, old steles and a large Qing stone basin on a Yuan base, and the temple houses the China Buddhist Academy and is known for its lilacs in spring.
