About Yan'an
Yan'an spreads over the loess plateau of northern Shaanxi, where thick wind-blown silt has worn into ridges and gullies and cave homes called yaodong are dug into the hillsides. It is best known as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party from 1937 to 1947. On its eastern edge the Yellow River plunges over the Hukou Waterfalls and swings through the great meander of Qiankun Bay, and in the south the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor stands among ancient cypresses at Huangling.
