About Bayannur

Bayannur, Mongolian for 'rich lake', is the farmland of the Hetao plain on the Yellow River's northern loop, watered through canals led from the Sanshenggong barrage, built in 1959 to 1961. Reed-fringed lakes such as Ulansuhai Nur, a stopover for whooper swans and pelicans, and Nalin Lake break the fields. Along the Langshan range, the Yinshan Rock Paintings hold more than 10,000 engraved images, from the Neolithic to recent centuries, with later inscriptions in Turkic, Tangut and Mongolian.
