About Qiqihar
Qiqihar takes its name from a Daur word meaning 'border' or 'natural pasture', and the Daur still have their own district, Meilisi, within the city. It was the seat of Heilongjiang's Qing military governors from 1699 and the provincial capital again from 1949 to 1954, and its old centre keeps the Bukui Mosque, the oldest in Heilongjiang, and Longsha Park with its lakeside Wangjiang Tower of 1908. Just outside, Zhalong Nature Reserve is a vast reed marsh famous for its red-crowned cranes.
