Wuzhou 梧州Wúzhōu
Flood-ready arcades, a river goddess and dark tea that improves with age

About Wuzhou
Wuzhou stands where the Gui River joins the Xun to form the Xi, the waterway into Guangdong, and its people speak Cantonese. Opened to foreign trade in 1897, its old quarter keeps some 560 arcaded qilou shophouses, with upper-floor 'water doors' and iron rings on the pillars for mooring boats when floods filled the streets, and at its north end the Dragon Mother Temple honours a river goddess. In the hills of Cangwu, Liubao town makes a dark tea with a betel-nut aroma.
