About Xiamen

Xiamen grew on an island at the mouth of the Jiulong River: the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing opened it, then known in English as Amoy, to British trade, and in 1980 it became one of China's first four special economic zones. A short ferry ride away, the villas and car-free lanes of Gulangyu Island joined the World Heritage list in 2017. The Singapore-based philanthropist Tan Kah Kee founded Xiamen University in 1921 and began Jimei School Village, and Hulishan Fort keeps a 19th-century Krupp gun.
