Wuhu 芜湖Wúhú
Hammered-iron pictures, shrimp-roe noodles and a treaty-port riverfront

About Wuhu
Wuhu grew up where the Qingyi River joins the Yangtze, and after 1877 it became one of China's four great rice markets. Opened as a treaty port in 1876, it keeps the Old Wuhu Customs House, the Former British Consulate and St. Joseph Cathedral near the river, while Guangji Temple on Zheshan hill is known as 'Little Jiuhua'. Local smiths still forge iron pictures, a craft on China's first national list of intangible heritage, and Fantawild Resort adds a cluster of theme parks.
