About Daqin Pagoda
This seven-storey octagonal brick pagoda in the Qinling foothills was first recorded in 1065, when the poet Su Dongpo visited it and wrote a poem about the Daqin temple. Daqin was an old Chinese name for the Roman world, and since 2001 some writers have claimed the site as a Tang-dynasty church of the Church of the East, a claim for which there is still no conclusive archaeological evidence. An earthquake in 1556 badly damaged the pagoda and the temple was abandoned; its exterior was repaired in 1999.
