About Jiangdong Bridge

Also known as the Hudu ('Tiger Crossing') Bridge, this crossing of the North Jiulong River began as a pontoon bridge in 1190, became a timber bridge on stone piers in 1210 and was rebuilt in stone after a fire in 1237. Bombing during the Second Sino-Japanese War left only five of the old piers, which were given a reinforced-concrete deck in 1969. Two spans still carry original stone beams about 23 m long, which the historian of science Joseph Needham judged to have no equal elsewhere.
