About Yumbulagang

Yumbulagang, a tower-like palace on a ridge above the Yarlung valley, is held by tradition to be the first building in Tibet, the palace of the legendary first king Nyatri Tsenpo. The 5th Dalai Lama turned it into a temple and added the golden roof; the present building, restored from 1982, has statues of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng and murals telling of the first king, the first building and the first field.
