About Nanshan Cliff Carvings, Pingyao
A row of Buddhist figures and one Taoist figure cut into an old quarry face on Nanshan hill at Pingyao, most of them seated Amitabha Buddhas from the Yuan dynasty, the largest almost 10 m tall. Inscriptions of 1328 and 1341 name monks of a nearby temple as the patrons, and the plainer, more human-looking figures differ in style from the Yuan carvings at Feilai Feng; nine badly damaged Ming figures stand at the eastern end.
