About Xibei Tianhou Palace
A temple to the sea goddess Mazu in Xibei village, Gaobei town, begun in 1542 and completed in 1662 by the local Lin clan, many of whose members had emigrated to South-East Asia. Its centrepiece is a seven-storey tower-like hall known locally as the Wenta, with Mazu on the ground floor and Guandi, Wenchang, Kuixing and Cangjie on the floors above; the complex also has a gateway and an opera stage facing the main hall.
