About Xinglong Pagoda

A thirteen-storey octagonal brick pagoda 54 m high in the north-east of Yanzhou's old town, standing in the grounds of the Yanzhou Museum. The tower is built in two stages, a thick lower body of seven storeys with internal galleries and steps and six much narrower storeys above, which gives it a pagoda-on-a-pagoda profile; first built in 602 under the Sui, the present tower dates from the Song and was repaired after a 17th-century earthquake. Excavation of its underground chamber in 2008 produced a stone casket, a gilded silver coffin and a gold relic bottle, and the museum shows local archaeology including Neolithic pottery from nearby sites.
