About He Garden

A large late-Qing residence and garden, also called Jixiao Shanzhuang, built from 1862 to 1875 by He Zhidao, a former circuit intendant in Hubei, who added the older Pianshi Shanfang garden in 1883. A two-storey covered walkway links the halls of the house with the garden, and buildings with Western details stand among classical rockeries and ponds; the rockery of Pianshi Shanfang is attributed to the painter Shitao. In China it is often called 'the foremost garden of the late Qing'.
