About Xingcheng Old Town
Xingcheng Old Town is the former Ming garrison city of Ningyuan, founded in 1428 and enclosed by a roughly square circuit of brick-faced walls about 3 km round, with a gate in each side; it is counted among the best-preserved Ming city walls in China. At the crossing of the main streets stands a drum tower built in 1454 and repaired in 1777, and two carved stone memorial arches put up by the Zu brothers in 1631 and 1638 stand on Yanhui Street, along with a Confucian temple dating from 1428. The Ming general Yuan Chonghuan defended the town against a Manchu army in 1626, in the Battle of Ningyuan.
