About Cen Family Buildings (Gongbao Mansion), Xilin

The hillside compound of the Cen family above the Tuoniang River at Nalao, home of the Qing official Cen Yuying, Viceroy of Yunnan and Guizhou, and his son Cen Chunxuan. Its centrepiece, the Gongbao Mansion begun in 1876, is a three-courtyard brick-and-timber residence with painted beams and carved wood; around it stand the family's Nanyang Academy, the Rongludi house, a three-storey octagonal pavilion, an ancestral hall and a Ming-dynasty general's temple. The buildings blend Han official architecture with the building traditions of the Zhuang region of western Guangxi.
