About Guangde Temple, Xiangyang

A working Buddhist temple on the western edge of Xiangyang, founded in the Tang dynasty as Yunju Temple and renamed Guangde in the Ming. Its main draw is the Ming-dynasty Duobao ('Many Treasures') Pagoda behind the main hall, begun in 1494: a brick-and-stone base about 7 m high carrying a 10 m Tibetan-style stupa, ringed by smaller pagodas, with 48 stone Buddha figures set in niches. The other surviving buildings were rebuilt in the Qing.
