About Banpo Museum
The excavated site of a Neolithic village of the Yangshao culture, lived in roughly 6,800 to 5,300 years ago, on the east bank of the Chan River in eastern Xi'an. Discovered in 1953 and excavated in five seasons from 1954 to 1957, it is covered by China's first museum built on a Neolithic site, opened in 1958, where a large hall shelters the foundations of round and square houses, storage pits, kilns and the village's defensive ditch, and galleries show painted pottery and stone tools.
