About Luzhi Ancient Town & Baosheng Temple

A canal town east of Suzhou whose old quarter keeps Ming- and Qing-style houses along its waterways and many old stone bridges, a few from the Song and Ming dynasties; in 2003 it was named one of China's first historic and cultural towns. Its centrepiece is Baosheng Temple, founded in 503, where the surviving clay arhats of an original set of eighteen are kept in a hall built for them around 1930; tradition credits them to the Tang sculptor Yang Huizhi, while the national listing dates them to the Northern Song. The temple grounds also hold the tomb of the Tang poet Lu Guimeng, who lived here in retirement.
