About Qiandeng Ancient Town

An old canal town south of Kunshan, threaded by a stone-slab street. Its landmark is the Qinfeng Pagoda, a slender seven-storey brick-and-timber pagoda whose founding is traditionally dated to 503, restored to its Song appearance in 1994 and closed to climbers since 2007. The town was the birthplace of the Ming–Qing scholar Gu Yanwu, whose five-courtyard family house, shrine and tomb form one site, and the home of Gu Jian, credited with founding Kunqu opera, who has a memorial hall here.
