About Wuxi Plum Garden
A hillside garden west of Wuxi begun in 1912 by the industrialist Rong Desheng, who planted some 3,000 plum trees around his family villa; it is one of the best-known places in the Jiangnan region to see plum blossom in late winter and early spring. Paths climb past pavilions, a nanmu-wood hall and the three-storey Nianqu Pagoda, built by the Rong brothers in 1930 in memory of their mother, to the 1930s Kaiyuan Temple; Rong Yiren gave the garden to the state in 1955 and it was later extended onto neighbouring Hengshan hill.
