About Wuying Pagoda
A seven-storey, eight-sided stone pagoda dated to 1270, in the last years of the Southern Song, and built to imitate a timber pagoda; it is often described as the oldest surviving structure in Wuhan. Carved figures of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, arhats and guardians decorate its base and body. After it began to tilt badly it was moved in 1963 from the site of the lost Xingfu Temple to its present spot at the foot of Hongshan, and its name ('Shadowless') comes from a legend that it casts no shadow at noon on the summer solstice.
