About Gude Temple
An active Buddhist temple in Hankou, founded in 1877 as a small hermitage and expanded in the early twentieth century into one of Wuhan's four main monasteries. Its halls, built mainly between 1916 and 1934, are an unusual mix of styles, and Jawaharlal Nehru noted its cluster of Indian-style pagodas on a visit in 1954. In 1911 its monks tended wounded soldiers of the Wuchang Uprising, and the remains of more than 3,000 fallen revolutionaries were buried beside it.
