About Tong Pass

Tongguan, the fortified pass first built in 196 AD where the Wei River flows into the Yellow River, guarded the eastern approach to the Guanzhong plain and its capitals. Its walled town was demolished for the Sanmenxia Dam reservoir around 1960, but remains of the Han and Ming walled towns, the Ming Lower South Gate and the old Shuipo Lane survive. Since 2011 a tourism development on the hill to the east has added squares, old-style shopping streets and a rebuilt Shanhe Yilan gate tower, which since 2018 has housed the Tongguan County Museum.
