About Miyin Temple

A Chan Buddhist monastery on Mount Wei (Weishan) in western Ningxiang, founded in the early 9th century by the monk Lingyou, whose teaching gave rise to the Weiyang (also romanised Guiyang) school of Chan, and named Miyin by imperial grant in 849. It has burned and been rebuilt many times, most recently after a fire in 1918, and its halls, including the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, stand within the Weishan national scenic area of forested hills, also known for Weishan Maojian tea. A giant statue of the thousand-armed Guanyin stands on the hillside in the same scenic area.
