About Tianning Temple, Nantong

Founded in the Tang dynasty as Baoen Guangxiao Temple and given its present name in 1457, Tianning Temple is the old heart of Nantong: the 10th-century city was laid out on an axis running from the temple to Langshan. Its Song-style main hall and the Guangxiao Pagoda, an octagonal brick-and-timber tower of five storeys first built in the Tang and rebuilt in the Song, stand with four old ginkgos and two Ming wells. In the late Qing Zhang Jian turned the eastern part of the grounds into a school, today's Nantong High School.
