About Tianhou Palace (Tianjin Mazu Temple)

Tianhou Palace, popularly called Niangniang Gong, is a temple to the sea goddess Mazu on the west bank of the Sancha Estuary, begun in the Yuan dynasty, formally ordered by the court in 1326 and largely rebuilt in 1985. Its halls run east to west from an opera stage and flagpoles through the gate, archway and main hall to a scripture pavilion, and today they house the Tianjin Folk Museum, with displays on canal transport, marriage customs, commerce and folk art.
