About Yuhuatai (Rain Flower Terrace)

A ridge of low hills just south of Zhonghua Gate, named after a legend that flowers rained from the sky when the monk Yunguang preached here in 503. From 1927 to 1949 it was an execution ground where many Communists and other prisoners were killed, and Japanese war criminals were executed here after the war; since 1950 it has been a memorial park with a martyrs' monument on the main hill, a large sculpture group and a memorial hall. The wider scenic area also holds the tomb of the Ming scholar Fang Xiaoru, the Gaozuo Temple, a museum of the coloured 'rain-flower' pebbles and a spring once ranked second south of the Yangtze.
