About Great Bao'en Temple Heritage Park

The site of the Great Bao'en Temple, rebuilt by the Yongle Emperor from 1412 on the site of the older Changgan Temple, whose nine-storey, 78 m pagoda faced with white porcelain and glazed tiles was famous in Europe as the Porcelain Tower of Nanjing until it was blown up in 1856 during the Taiping war. A heritage park opened here in December 2015 with a light modern tower of steel and art glass over the excavated pagoda base, deliberately not a copy of the original, and glass walkways above the Song and Ming foundations. Displays cover the crypt of the Northern Song Changgan Temple, where an iron casket holding the Seven-Treasure Ashoka stupa was found in 2008, and a Ming imperial stele of 1428 survives on the site.
