About Menglian Chieftain's Palace
The seat of the Dao family, hereditary Dai chieftains of Menglian, whose post the Qing raised to a pacification commission (xuanfusi) in 1709; in Dai it is called the 'golden palace'. The present compound, rebuilt from the late 19th century into the early 20th, combines Chinese-style gate towers and courtyards with raised Dai halls and houses the county's ethnic history museum, with the chieftains' robes, seals and documents on show. It stands at the top of Nayun, the old town of Menglian, whose upper, middle and lower quarters are still lived in.
