About Vasco da Gama Garden
The garden was laid out in 1898 to mark 400 years since Vasco da Gama opened the sea route to India (Jardim de Vasco da Gama), and it was part of a long tree-lined avenue of the same name. At its centre a bronze bust of the navigator, set up in 1911, stands on a white marble plinth carrying an excerpt from the epic poem The Lusiads, with old cannons facing front and back. Renovations added a wave-shaped pond and a fountain around the bust.
