About Nossa Senhora Village (Ká Hó Leprosarium and Our Lady of Sorrows Church)

A village founded in 1964 on the site of the Ká Hó Leprosarium (Vila de Nossa Senhora), the only leprosarium site left in Macau and the last in the city to close. Its main buildings are five single-storey houses of 1929–30 built in an arc along the shore and the Our Lady of Sorrows Church of 1966, a concrete building with a triangular façade, a roof carried on eight sets of angled beams and a crucifix by the Italian sculptor Francisco Messina. The church was the first in Macau to follow the interior reforms of the Second Vatican Council, with the altar in the middle of the hall and the seats fanned around it.
