About Longchang Stone Arches

Longchang is known for its stone memorial arches (paifang): 17 survive, built between 1496 and the late 19th century to honour upright officials, chaste widows, filial sons and long-lived elders. Most are four-pillar, three-gate bluestone gateways carved in imitation of timber, about 11 metres high, and the main groups stand along the old roads at the town's South and North Gates.
