About Qutan Temple
A Gelug-school Tibetan Buddhist monastery in a side valley south of Ledu, begun in 1392 in the early Ming dynasty and laid out like a small palace with a gatehouse, three courtyards and a long axis of halls, and nicknamed the 'little Forbidden City' in tourism material. Its covered corridors carry about 400 square metres of Buddhist wall paintings, and two Ming imperial stele pavilions stand in the front court. It is described as the best-preserved large Ming temple complex in north-west China.
