About Site of Dongjing, the Northern Song Capital

The remains of Dongjing, capital of the Northern Song from 960 to 1127, lie buried under modern Kaifeng beneath the silt of later Yellow River floods. In the city centre the excavated Zhouqiao bridge and Bian River site, with a Ming arch bridge on Song foundations and Northern Song stone river walls carved with sea horses, cranes and clouds, is open as a public archaeology site. The pits reach the Song river banks about 10 m below today's streets, showing how deep the old capital lies.
