About Dule Temple

Dule Temple, in the old town of Jizhou, keeps two Liao-dynasty timber buildings from 984, the mountain gate and the Guanyin Pavilion, which are among the oldest surviving wooden buildings in China. The pavilion holds a clay statue of the eleven-headed Guanyin about 16 metres tall, and its walls carry Yuan-dynasty murals. A Qing imperial lodge built in 1753 stands in the east of the compound, and the architectural historian Liang Sicheng's survey of the temple in the 1930s brought it wide attention.
