About Heyang Ancient Village

A village of the Zhu clan in Xinjian town, founded in the Five Dynasties period and replanned in the Yuan, whose lanes and water channels still follow that plan. It keeps more than 1,500 rooms in buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties and the Republican era, among them some 30 complete old houses and more than ten ancestral halls, entered through the Yuan-period Bashi Gate honouring eight local imperial-examination graduates. Bashimen Street has been revived with craft shops, and the teahouse by the gate has been a stage for dujiao taichang, a local art in which one performer plays a whole band's music.
