About South Lake (Nanhu), Jiaxing

Jiaxing's best-known lake, about half a square kilometre on the south side of the old city, has a garden island reached by boat whose Yanyu (Misty Rain) Tower, last rebuilt in 1918, so pleased the Qianlong Emperor that he had a copy built at his summer resort in Chengde. In early August 1921 the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, after leaving Shanghai, held its final session on a pleasure boat on this lake, and a replica of the boat built in 1959 is moored at the island as the commemorated site. The South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall, in a building opened on the south shore in 2011, presents the party's founding.
