About Huizhou West Lake

A chain of five shallow lakes on the west side of old Huizhou, linked by causeways and bridges, which Su Dongpo named West Lake during his exile here in 1094–1097. He helped pay for the Su Causeway and the Xixin Bridge, and Gushan islet holds the tomb of his companion Wang Chaoyun and a Dongpo memorial hall; other sights include the Sizhou Pagoda, first built in the Tang, and the old Fenghu Academy. The 5A scenic area also takes in Honghua Lake in the hills to the south-west, and the West Lake shore paths make an easy walk from the city centre.
