About Tilanqiao Prison

Built from 1901 as the gaol of the Shanghai International Settlement (the Ward Road Gaol) and once billed as the largest prison in the Far East, Tilanqiao keeps cell blocks and other buildings dating from 1917 to 1935 behind walls more than 5 metres high. Its inmates were moved to a new prison in Qingpu in 2024, and that year the city and Hongkou District were studying how to reuse the old compound.

How to get to Tilanqiao Prison

The main gate is at 147 Changyang Road in Hongkou's Tilanqiao Historic Area, a few minutes' walk from Tilanqiao station on Metro Line 12 and from the Jewish Refugees Museum; the prison museum inside took only group visits in 2024, so individual visitors should expect to see just the walls and gate from the street.
