Why go to Central Street & St Sophia Cathedral
Central Street is a cobbled pedestrian street about 1.45 km long, running from Xinyang Square to the Songhua riverbank, lined with Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and eclectic buildings, shops, cafés and ice-lolly stands. A short walk to the south-east stands St Sophia Cathedral, a red-brick former Russian Orthodox church with a green onion dome, now home to the Harbin Architecture Art Gallery. Together they are the best way to see Harbin's Russian-era past in a few hours.
The story
Russian builders laid out the street from 1898, as the China Eastern Railway made Harbin a rail hub, and its stone paving followed in the 1920s. St Sophia began as a wooden military church in 1907 and was rebuilt in brick, the present building finished in 1932, for the city's large Russian community; it stopped serving as a church in 1958 and has housed the architecture gallery since 1997.
What to see at Central Street & St Sophia Cathedral
The 'bread-stone' granite blocks laid in the 1920s give the street its character; walk it end to end from Xinyang Square to the river.
At number 89, an Art Nouveau-influenced hotel completed in 1913, a nationally listed heritage building that still takes guests; its ice-lolly stand outside draws queues.
The monument at the riverbank end of the street, with a promenade along the Songhua River beside it.
A Byzantine and Russian Revival cathedral about 53 m tall, its dome and brick curves best seen from the open square in front; inside, the Harbin Architecture Art Gallery shows an exhibition on the building and the city.
A short walk from the street, a city park known in winter for its ice-lantern displays.
How to visit Central Street & St Sophia Cathedral
Start at Xinyang Square and stroll north to the river, which takes an hour or two with stops, then walk east to the cathedral square. A half-day lets you add the cathedral museum, Zhaolin Park and a riverside walk; in the evening the street is at its liveliest, and shops and restaurants stay open late.
How to get to Central Street & St Sophia Cathedral
Both are in Daoli District in central Harbin: Metro Line 2 has a Central Street station (中央大街站) beside the street, and taxis from Harbin Railway Station take about ten minutes. The airport is about 45 minutes away by road; the cathedral is roughly 700 m south-east of the street's coordinates, a 10–15 minute walk.
Where to stay
Stay in Daoli District near Central Street, where hotels sit within a few minutes' walk of the street and the cathedral; you can then see both after dark and reach the Ice and Snow World directly on Metro Line 2 in winter.
What to eat
A cream bar sold from the Modern Hotel's shop on the street, eaten outdoors even in sub-zero winter.
A smoked pork sausage in the Russian style, sold in delis along the street and a popular souvenir.
- Dalieba Russian-style loaf 大列巴: A large round Russian-style loaf from Harbin's Russian-influenced bakeries, sold on and around Central Street.
