About Qiantang River Bridge

A double-deck road and rail bridge across the Qiantang River, designed by the engineer Mao Yisheng and built between 1934 and 1937 as the first such bridge designed and built in China. Less than three months after it opened it was blown up by the Chinese side to slow the Japanese advance, and it was fully repaired only in 1953; it still carries trains on the lower deck and road traffic above, and a memorial hall near its northern approach tells its story.
