About Liaodi Pagoda
The Liaodi Pagoda, in the former Kaiyuan Temple precinct of Dingzhou, is an octagonal, eleven-storey brick tower about 84 m tall and is regarded as the tallest surviving historic brick pagoda in China. It was built between 1001 and 1055 under the Northern Song to house Buddhist relics brought from India, and doubled as a lookout against the Khitan Liao to the north, hence the name meaning 'enemy-spotting pagoda'. The ground-floor corridor keeps Song-dynasty murals.
