About Datong Mass Grave Memorial

A memorial museum at Meiyukou, south-west of Datong, built where the remains of miners were found in two natural caves; it records the forced labour used in the Datong coal mines during the Japanese occupation of 1937–1945. The memorial complex, which opened in its present form in 2010, covers about 337,000 square metres, and a black granite wall is inscribed with the figures for coal taken (14 million tonnes) and lives lost (60,000). The exhibition also traces the history of coal mining around Datong.
