About Taihe City Ruins and Nanzhao Dehua Stele

The site of Taihe, capital of the Nanzhao kingdom from 739 to 779, on the slope between the Cangshan range and Erhai Lake. Little survives above ground except stretches of its rammed-earth north and south walls, but the Nanzhao Dehua Stele, erected in 766, still stands in Taihe village: its text of some 3,800 characters on Nanzhao's relations with Tang China and Tibet is now mostly worn away, yet it remains a key source for the kingdom's history.
