About Xingjiao Temple

A Buddhist temple on the Shaoling plateau south of Xi'an, founded in 669 to house the remains of Xuanzang, the monk whose pilgrimage to India inspired Journey to the West. Its west courtyard holds his five-storey brick pagoda, about 21 m tall, flanked by the smaller pagodas of his disciples Kuiji and Yuance, and the three were inscribed in 2014 as part of the Silk Roads World Heritage site. The temple halls themselves were burnt in the 19th century and rebuilt during the Republican period, and it remains an active monastery.
