About Xiangji Temple

Xiangji Temple is regarded as the cradle of Pure Land Buddhism, founded by a disciple of the Tang master Shandao in his memory after his death in 681. The Shandao Pagoda, a square Tang brick pagoda that has lost its upper storeys, stands at the north end of the temple's axis behind halls rebuilt many times after damage in the An Lushan rebellion and the persecution of Buddhism in the 840s. It is an active monastery, and Chinese and Japanese monks have held joint ceremonies here in Shandao's memory.
