About Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps
A flight of granite steps at the southern end of Duddell Street, completed in 1883, with heavily moulded Tuscan-order newels and balusters and four gas lamps mounted on the balustrades. The lamps date from the early twentieth century and, since street lighting was electrified in 1967, have been the only working gas lamps of their type in the city. Super Typhoon Mangkhut damaged the steps and lamps in 2018, and the restoration was completed in December 2019.
